We run outdoor education programs and activities for schools, community groups and families. Outdoor education is a form of experiential education and outdoor learning, based in wilderness scenarios.
Outdoor education is about teaching young people and adults alike universal skills for life, such as: determination; resilience; and perseverance. Spending time outdoors is great for your physical and mental wellbeing.
Our campers often tell us that their experience at a Y Discovery camp strengthens their:
- mental wellbeing
- physical health
- personal development
- connection with the natural world and community.
Come to a Y Discovery camp and you'll find yourself in the great outdoors - from the beach to the mountains.
Mental wellbeing
Studies have shown that exercising on a regular basis and spending time outdoors can help you sleep better, treat mild to moderate depression, lower your stress levels and improve self-esteem.
Being outdoors and away from the distractions of modern technology means that campers get to be present and in the moment - giving you space to reflect, feel happy and optimistic about the future. Physically active people are also 15% less likely to develop depression. 30 minutes of activity a day can increase your brain's serotonin levels (an important chemical that regulates mood, appetite, sleep and other functions). So visit a Y Discovery camp today!
Physical health
According to the Department of Health, the recommended amount of exercise for adults is between 2.5-5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity per week. But that doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon or pump weights at the gym - visit one of our camps where you can make healthy choices by eating well and developing a new physical skill. Whether it's bushwalking, cycling, kayaking, rock climbing, or surfing - start your adventure today! Find out about our programs.
Personal development
Not only is being in the great outdoors good for your mental and physical health, it's great for your personal development too. Campers learn to set goals and persist to achieve them. Camping develops independence, leadership skills, and builds resilience - as campers learn how to cope with group challenges and solve problems effectively. So if you're a school, community group or family looking to work on yourselves and have an adventure - we've got a program or Y Discovery camp for you.
Connection with the natural world and community
The great thing about being surrounded by mother nature is that campers get to experience and appreciate the natural world. By learning about our local ecosystems and the human impact on the great outdoors, you'll learn how to be socially responsible - so that together, we can better respect and protect our environment.
You'll also be able to connect as a team and contribute to the camp community through fun group activities. A Y Discovery camp is a great place to make new friends, spend time on existing relationships and connect with others in the community.
