How to get to Howmans Gap

  • By car

If you are driving, Howmans Gap Discovery Camp is four and a half hours from Melbourne, eight hours from Sydney, and a day’s drive from Adelaide.

We are located 100m on the left before the Falls Creek Resort entry gates.

  • By car in winter

During the snow season it is a legal requirement that all vehicles entering the resort carry snow chains. This includes AWD and 4WD vehicles and applies from the season opening on 9 June through to the last day of the season on 7 October. The fine for not carrying or fitting snow chains where directed is substantial.

The sheltered approach to Falls Creek means the road is not usually affected by snow and ice conditions. In most cases chains are only fitted during or directly after heavy snowfall, and usually only for the final 5 - 10km. Please be mindful of ice patches however as these can form with clear conditions, particularly in early morning.

Snow chains can be hired from a number of outlets in  Mount Beauty and Myrtleford on your way to Falls Creek. For up to date information on chain fitting status make sure you check the snow report page on your way.

If travelling in a diesel vehicle, you will also need to fill up with alpine diesel or buy an additive. This is available from the service stations in Mount Beauty and Myrtleford. Please contact the service stations for their hours of operation.

Snow chains can be hired in Mount Beauty. We would suggest you ring any of the ski hire outlets in Mount Beauty to organise this before arriving in town to make sure they have chains to fit your car.

Here are some other tips for driving up in winter:

    • ensure your vehicle's battery is in good condition
    • LPG vehicles perform best on petrol in alpine areas
    • add antifreeze to your vehicle's radiator before you leave home
    • avoid sudden braking or acceleration on snow or ice
    • bring a windscreen scraper to help clear ice from your car windows
    • carry a shovel in case you need to dig your car out of the snow when it's time to head home
    • put your jackets, gloves, beanies and boots within easy reach.
  • Parking

There is parking available at Howmans Gap.
